Local selected for SA Lifesaving team
A world champ in the making: Johnathan Rorke.

Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club is proud to announce that one of its members, Johnathan Rorke, has been selected for the SA Lifesaving team to compete in the 2017 International Surf Rescue Challenge which will be hosted by Surf Lifesaving New Zealand and will be held at Tauranga from Thursday, November 30 to December 3, 2017.

Johnathan, son of proud parents, Barry and Gillian Rorke and an Environmental Science student at Mangosuthu University of Technology, represented Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club at the SA Surf Lifesaving Championships held in Cape Town during April 2017 and won the gold medal for the Senior Beach Sprint event. In so doing, he beat the current World Champion, Ryle de Morny.

This was a wonderful achievement and the club is very proud of Johnathan. With community support and an intensive training schedule, Johnathan has a chance to win gold at the IRSC event in New Zealand.

It is estimated that the cost per team member will be approximately R50 000 and like most SA National teams, this will be fully funded by the competitors.

This is obviously a huge financial burden on all competitors and their families. Johnathan is urgently seeking financial assistance from our community to enable him to represent South Africa, his lifetime ambition. Contributions can be made to the Scottburgh Surf Lifesaving Club and will be kept in trust for him until the amount is due to be paid to Lifesaving South Africa.

Any contribution, no matter how small, could make a difference to this young man’s career and Scottburgh could possibly have its own World Champion walking amongst us.
