The Moses Kotane Institute (MKI) , an entity of EDTEA in partnership with ISHASHALAZI Investments recently hosted a competition called, “I AM AN ENGINEER”. This was a pilot project which involved four randomly selected districts viz, UGU, UTHUKELA, UMLAZI and UMKHANYAKUDE.

It was a competition targeted mainly at rural high schools where they competed over engineering related tasks.

The competition was aimed at igniting the interest and to inspire learners in Science, Technology and related fields. Its intention was to also create a dialogue between the learning institutions and rural high schools in understanding where there shortfalls are regarding Maths, Science and Technology.

The proposed task for the competition was for learners to design a sustainable and Eco- friendly house and to create a model for the design.

The preliminary round of the competition entailed groups of learners from selected schools to make their presentations to a panel of judges from the Architectural Department at the Durban University of Technology at different venues.

The top schools 3 or 4 schools from each of the Districts then attended the overall winners awards function in Isipingo on  November 28. Schools representing UGU District were: Olwandle High, Shepstone Secondary, Roseville Secondary and Sister Joans High School.

The first prize was an Eco-friendly Science and Maths Laboratory worth 1,2 million rands fitted with computers and lab equipment. The second prize was R80 000 and the third prize was R60 000.

We as UGU District are extremely proud to announce that OLWANDLE HIGH SCHOOL from Gamalakhe scooped the top prize from all other districts and are the proud recipients of a state of the art Science and Maths laboratory to the value of R1,2 million.

The educators and learners of this school in particular have done us all proud and we commend you and all other schools who have participated for your effort and commitment.
