Sergeant Joel Singo of the Scottburgh SAPS has registered an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the drowning of an 8-year-old boy in a tidal pool at the Scottburgh beach on Tuesday, January 3.

The body of Alwande Ngongoma was removed to the KZN Medico-Legal Mortuary (MLM) in Park Rynie for a post mortem examination.

It is alleged that the boy, who lives in Malangeni, had gone to the Scottburgh beach with his relatives.

Later in the day, his mother, who works and stays in Umzinto, arrived at the beach to join her family and relatives. She became concerned when she could not find her son Alwande among them.

A search for the missing boy ensued and eventually at around 1pm, Nhlakanipho Shozi, an uncle of the deceased, discovered the boy stuck in the adult tidal pool drainage outlet.

Shozi alerted a lifeguard who retrieved the body from the pool. Alwanda Ngongoma was pronounced dead at the scene by attending paramedics.

The deceased’s grieving mother was inconsolable.

The youngster had been missing for approximately half an hour before the discovery of his lifeless body. Investigations continue. Although the beaches were teeming with throngs of visitors over the Christmas and New Year’s long weekends, there were no other drownings in the Scottburgh policing precincts.
