Umzinto vs Freedom Fighters

Three games have already been played and the coaches are satisfied with the progress shown by the team. In the first 40 over match, a combined U15/U19 squad took on the Resevoir Hills Hub in Durban. The Hub batted first and made 179/10. Unathi Bomela took 3 for 25 in his bowling spell and Privashen Mudaly 3 for 26. The boys’ fielding was below par though.

When Umzinto went in to bat, wickets fell regularly despite a brilliant 54 from Fabian Naidoo and a fighting 24 from captain Privashen Mudaly. Umzinto managed to reach 145 with the fall of the last wicket.

In the second match against a touring Vivek Academy team from India, the Umzinto boys started to show the fruits of their hard work. Vivek Academy was bowled out for 91 runs with Lashay Govender taking 3 for 12 and Privashen Mudaly 2 for 22.

Umzinto won the match losing only 5 wickets along the way. Captain Fabian Naidoo made 37* and Akhilesh Maharaj 35* for a much improved performance. The third match was against another touring team from India, a combination of the Frredom Fighters and Maulana Azad Academies from Delhi.

In the 40 over match, the visitors were bowled out for a lowly 51 runs in 19 overs with Akilesh Beeput taking 3 for 5 in a hat trick and Nieleshan Moodley 3 for 6. Umzinto made the winning runs in 12 overs with Rakishi Maharaj scoring 18* and Fabian Naidoo 16*. As there was still half the day left, it was decided to play a T20 after lunch. The tourists batted first and upped their game by scoring 77/10. Lashay Govender took 4 for 8 and Rakishi Maharaj 1 for 1.

However Umzinto got off to a flyer and won the match in the 11th over without losing any wickets.

Akhilesh Maharaj smashed a brutal 50* with support from Nieleshan Moodley ending on 21.

* There are more matches planned against another touring team from India, touring Prestige College team from Gauteng as well as the Chatsworth and Resevoir Hills Hubs. Players not part of the current squad are still welcome to join.
