Four suspects arrested in Umzinto, stolen property recovered

Recovered property: D/Sergeant Blessing Ngcobo, D/Constable Bonginkosi Chiliza, Lieutenant Colonel Vivani Vivian Zuma (Station Commander) and D/Constable Charity Radebe with the recovered property.

On Friday, August 18, at about 8:15am, members of the Scottburgh SAPS, Umzinto SAPS and Crime Intelligence acted on intelligence received and set themselves up to intercept a white VW Polo with Durban registration plates, as it was allegedly transporting stolen property from the South Coast to Durban.

Instead of transporting the goods directly to Durban the suspects drove via Malangeni towards Umzinto where it is believed that another vehicle was going to take them through to Durban, with the property.

However, Detective Sergeant Blessing Ngcobo and Detective Constables Bonginkosi Chiliza and Charity Radebe of the Umzinto SAPS intercepted the vehicle near the Beneva school in Malangeni.

There were allegedly four occupants in the VW Polo and a large quantity of property.

The occupants of the vehicle were unable to give a reasonable account for the possession of these items.

The four were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property and were taken to the Umzinto police station, where they were detained pending their first appearance in the Umzinto Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 21.

Among the items found in the vehicle and seized by police as exhibits were a big screen plasma TV, assorted cutlery, various remote controls, binoculars, frozen food, shoes, clothing, luggage bags, cellphones, bedding, an electric fryer, a wallet and a gas gun.

It was subsequently established that the four suspects, aged between 32 and 36, were linked to three burglaries that had occurred the previous night, August 17, in Ridge Road and Marine Drive in Bazley.

The property is yet to be identified by the complainants in the burglary cases.

Further investigations indicate that the suspects are also wanted in cases registered in the Durban area.
