Budding Scientists of Scottburgh High School excel at the International Science Fair

Three learners from Scottburgh High School represented the Southern KZN region at the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists International Science Fair which was held at the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre from 3-5 October 2017. The standard of the competition was extremely high with 5 countries participating where only the best regional winners from each country being represented.

Sarishka Amichund, a Grade 9 learner based her project on Cryogenics where she investigated seed temperatures versus the resulting plant growth. She received a Bronze medal for her efforts.

Khilona Piyarlall who is also a Grade 9 learner, created an automatic water dispenser for pets, which alerts pet owners who are away from home when the water source is depleted. She received R500 for being a Gold award recipient in her category, R1 000 for winning her category in the junior section and R50 000 for producing the Best Overall Junior Project across all the categories. She also received a lap top.

Ashraf Moosa who is the top Grade 11 academic achiever at Scottburgh High School was also a Gold recipient winner for his project which was based on optimising microbial cells. He received R500 for his project, in addition to this he was awarded the option of a bursary for his first year of study from Wits University in the Engineering faculty and a R50 000 bursary for his first year of study in any faculty from Stellenbosch University.

The experience of rubbing shoulders with so many experts in the Science field as well as the current Minister of Education, Mrs. Naledi Pandor, has made the entire trip a most inspiring experience for these aspiring scientists.
