Umdoni council loses another councillor

Cllr Luthuli

Umdoni Municipality has been dealt another blow after losing yet another council member. Word of the passing of Ward 16 Councillor Dolly ‘MamaD’ Sheilla Luthuli quickly spread early this morning, November 15, reportedly after complications after a short illness. ‘MamaD’ as she was fondly known, lived in Amandawe and worked at the ANC Constituency office in Umzinto before being voted into council in August last year.

Earlier this year, another Umdoni councillor, DeWet Cele was laid to rest also after a short illness. As well as former councilor Ntokozo Maphumulo who was killed outside his home in Amahlongwa.

Umdon Municipality has since released a statement on the late councillor:

“Umdoni Municipality is sad to announce the passing away of yet another Ward Councillor to a short illness. Cllr Dolly Luthuli who was affectionately known as Mama D, lost her battle to an illness in the early hours of this morning (15 November 2017).

Cllr D Luthuli was inaugurated as an ANC Ward Councillor for Ward 16 at the August 2017 Local Government Elections. She had been working at the Umzinto ANC Constituency Office from 2007 until she was elected as a Ward Councillor at Umdoni Municipality.

She served under the following portfolios:

  • Corporate Governance
  • MPAC (Municipal Public Accounts Committee)
  • She also served as the Champion for Sports and Recreation under Umdoni

She was a warm but very strong person who was a firm believer in transparency, service delivery and community development.   She will be missed by the Umdoni Council, Management and Staff of Umdoni Municipality.

May her soul Rest In Peace and may her family find strength during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.”
