SAHSS promotes harmony, peace and tolerance

The South African Hindu Sewa Samaj (SAHSS) is a non-profit organisation aimed at promoting Hindusium through its Dharmic teachings and charitable work across multi-cultural communities. Our mission is to work towards the advancement of all linguistic groups in a spirit of respect, unity and humanity. An underlying mission of the Sewa Samaj is to promote a spirit of harmony, peace and tolerance (ubuntu) and to contribute to good relations between all communities. The values on which the Sewa Samaj bases its activities are selfless sacrifice, universal brotherhood, truth, unity and social cohesion.

The NPO has been involved in a number of community projects this year, which included a Diwali hamper distribution, a Hanuman Chalisa Chant and a Satyanarayan Vrat Community Katha celebration. The executive committee of the South African Hindu Sewa Samaj brought light into the homes of families in need by delivering Diwali grocery hampers, as well as providing them with a hot meal on the day.

“We cannot imagine Diwali without fireworks, sweets and food. Diwali is the most significant socio-religious festival. We all wear new clothes, eat sweets, light fireworks and light up our houses with modern LED lights and traditional candles. Ironically these things are limited to a few. The underprivileged section of our society is not only deprived of these things but is also deprived of daily necessities.

“The distribution of the Diwali hampers makes the members proud to be able to provide sustenance for these families,” said PRO Ranjith Rampersad. Hanuman Chalisa is one of the great poetic works of Goswami Tulsidas and holds a special place in the Hindu religion.

It is said that by reciting Hanuman Chalisa, one can appease Lord Hanuman and seek his blessings. Reciting Hanuman Chalisa also helps in overcoming negativity in one’s life and brings good health and prosperity. The Sewa Samaj also held a Satyanarayan Vrat Community Katha on July 23 at the Ghandinagar Creche.

The community of Ghandinagar was purified and blessed by the hawan prayer and service. Community members came in great numbers and participated in the prayer. Meals and parsad were served to all.

The Satyanarayan Puja is one of the most popular Hindu prayers. Satyanarayan means “the highest being who is an embodiment of Truth”. That is the Lord Vishnu in his manifestation as Lord Satyanarayan. One who observes this katha with full devotion and faith is certain to attain self-purification.

The katha is also performed on special occasions as an offering of gratitude to the Lord. This event was followed by Akand Hanuman Chalisa Chant, which consists of reciting the Hanuman Chalisa non-stop from 6am to 6pm. This year marked the 7th Akand Hanuman Chalisa Chant, which was held on August 13 at the Umzinto Town Hall.

People from far and wide attended this event.

The Sewa Samaj would like to extent heartfelt thanks to Pat and Reshmie from Fountain Head for providing the meals, and to all our sponsors and committee members for making these initiatives a success.
