Scottburgh High lad honoured by Ugu District

Timera Naidoo from Port Shepstone Secondary School and Sphamandla Zondi from Sister Joan's High School were best performers in Maths and Physics and also amongst the top 5 best performing pupils in the district. Fernando Gomez Fernandez from Scottburgh High School was honoured as one of the Top Achievers in Umdoni Municipality and in the District Top Achievers Top 5.

The best performers of the Class of 2017 reaped the rewards of their hard work at the Ugu District Municipality Mayoral Bursary Fund Awards ceremony held at the Port Shepstone Civic Centre on Wednesday, January 31.

The students were honoured for their sterling academic performances at their respective schools.

This year, the Mayoral Bursary Fund Programme has gone beyond only providing bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. A new system of awarding bursaries to top subject achievers and best overall achievers in each local municipality, has been introduced.

Also, certificates of achievement were awarded to the best performing teachers in various subjects, the best performing schools and the most improved school.

“We have awarded bursaries of R10 000 to 48 beneficiaries who have been accepted to register at tertiary education institutions around the country. Nine of the 48 beneficiaries were awarded these bursaries for being top achievers and best subject performers. Our total contribution is R480 000, increasing the number of beneficiaries by 11 and our financial aid by R100 000 from 2017,” said Ugu spokesperson, Mr France Zama.

The inception of this programme came about through the identification of a need to assist deserving students to further their education and to ensure an improved level of the graduate professional base.

This programme also enables the district to place emphasis on the importance of local government playing a pivotal role in building a strong graduate professional base by providing much needed financial assistance to deserving students who are studying towards professional careers.

This will ensure that education remains at the apex of our priorities in moving our district forward.

As Ugu District Municipality, we remain committed to ensuring that our top achievers and those from disadvantaged backgrounds claim their rights to education through initiatives such as this Mayoral Bursary Fund Programme,” said Mr Zama.
