Broken graders and costly vehicle maintenance irk councillors

Umdoni Municipality’s on-going problems with broken graders, which were aired at recent portfolio committee meetings, is a “replay” of the gripes that councillors voiced last year.

Councillors were adamant that broken graders should be sold and a system to hire graders be put in place.

A similar situation exists with the municipal vehicles in all the departments.

Large sums of money are spent on repairs and maintenance when replacement with new vehicles would probably be a more economical option.

Councillor Khan of Al- Jama-Ah illustrated a case where a key staff member had to hitch a lift to get to an area of concern.

However, there appears to be an expectation that the impending appointment of a fleet manager would change the manner in which vehicles are managed at Umdoni.
