Mayor lambastes senior managers

Mayor Dube with Eddie Baptie.

The Exco meeting on Tuesday, February 20, had an unusual start with Mayor Dube reprimanding management, and in particular certain General Managers, for not submitting reports timeously for the compilation of the Exco agenda.

The normally cool Mayor blasted those who caused the delays, stating that on Friday, he was asked to “sign the front page although the other pages of the agenda were not there”.

He also admonished senior staff for arriving late. He stated that he had noted that staff who were supposed to commence work at 7.30am were strolling in at around 8am. The mayor wanted to know how these people could discipline their staff when they themselves were breaking the rules.

He also wanted to know who was checking on this matter.

He stated that Umdoni’s image was being tarnished as the public was watching and reports in the media portrayed the municipality in a bad light.

The hushed silence was broken when Councillor Baptie of the DA responded by stating that this would probably not have happened if all the vacant posts, such as that of the municipal manager, had been filled timeously.

The consequences of not having a permanent MM were becoming evident.

Cllr Baptie said that the matter of filling vacant posts must be addressed.
