Elysium community stands together to fight crime and grime

911 Community Forum members Debbie Smith and Sharon Bales clear out invasive alien plants at Elysium.

The members of the Elysium 911 Community Forum are united in their fight against crime as well as keeping their little town clean. Using technology in the form of an app called Zello, has greatly improved the forum’s efforts in combating crime since its inception. The majority of the residents are loaded onto the app.

The app works as a two-way radio and can be used from anywhere.

Also included in the group are various emergency personnel. Just recently, the forum received a donation from Halfway Toyota, for medical supplies, for which the forum is extremely grateful.

There is no extra charge to the residents as the 911 Community Forum is funded solely by the members, from their own pockets. Not only does the forum deal with crime issues, but it also assists with emergencies and environmental issues. The forum is currently involved in a community project to plant trees in the area.

The forum also wants to attract wildlife and to beautify the area.

“Holiday makers find the Zello app very useful as we are immediately there to help. We have helped people stuck in stormwater drains, have towed a vehicle, and have even had to assist in medical emergencies.

We see that the municipality lacks resources, so we decided to identify areas around Elysium which we clear of all invasive plants and local families can adopt a spot where they can plant a tree in memory of a beloved family member.

We have also decided to repair the kerbs and to try to fix some of the potholes on our own.

Every Tuesday we have a workshop,” said Tillie Kirkland. From burglaries and fire incidents to lost dogs, 911 Community Forum sees to the needs of the Elysium residents.
