Policeman assisted scrap metal dealer accused of buying stolen goods, claims victim

A Roseville family is aggrieved at the slow progress made by police, after being repeatedly targeted by one perpetrator in particular. The perpetrator, who has managed to evade police, has allegedly stolen and sold this family’s goods to a local scrapyard, on more than one occasion.

The home owner, Mr Ramjoo, alleges that a certain police officer involved in the case, has been the reason for the suspect not being arrested. Mr Ramjoo said that in February this year, the perpetrator stole from his house again and on investigation, police discovered some of Mr Ramjoo’s stolen goods at a scrapyard.

Mr Ramjoo claims that the scrapyard owner, instead of cooperating with the police, sought the assistance of a police friend to avoid getting into trouble with the police. The sale of Mr Ramjoo’s goods was not recorded in the business’s books and the goods have not been recovered, neither has the suspect been arrested.

“I have had about ten break-ins between December 2017 and February this year.

“The culprit started inside my workshop and cleared the yard of a braai stand, sinks, power tools and a TV aerial. It appears that the thief was aware of our movements and waited for us to leave before he entered the premises.

“The police have not been much help, as they have not managed to catch the suspect and the scrapyard dealer has not been cooperating. I urge families to be vigilant when they go out and leave their homes unattended.

“They should alert their neighbours to keep a lookout or have a security company perform regular patrols. I have taken up my case with the station commander, regarding the interference by the policeman, and am hoping that my case will not be swept under the carpet,” said Mr Ramjoo. Police said a case of theft is being investigated by Detective Constable Erasmus Mbutho of the Umzinto SAPS Detective Service.

“A suspect has been identified, but is on the run from the police. The alleged stolen property has since been returned to the complainant. The allegation of a policeman assisting the scrap metal dealer has been brought to the attention of the Umzinto SAPS management and is being investigated,” said police spokesperson, Captain Vincent Pandarum.
