Crime awareness and surprise search at Zithokozise High School

SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER MAHLAWE ADDRESSES THE LEARNERS AT ZITHOKOZISE HIGH SCHOOL ON DRUGS AND CRIME

On Thursday morning, 19 April, Sergeants Christopher Mahlawe and Joel Singo of the Scottburgh SAPS Social Crime Prevention unit conducted a crime awareness campaign at the Zithokozise High School in KwaCele, Amandawe. The learners listened attentively as Sergeant Christopher Mahlawe addressed them on drugs and the consequences of engaging in criminal activities. Booklets on drugs were distributed to the learners.

The acting Vispol Commander of the Scottburgh SAPS, Captain Vijay Moodley, accompanied by members of the Umzinto K9 unit, returned to the school a short while later with Sergeants Mahlawe and Singo to carry out a surprise search to look for drugs and dangerous weapons. Many of the learners were in possession of cellphones and they were warned that it was against school policy to carry cellphones to school. Warrant Officer Brian Khumalo of the K9 unit had his narcotics dog, Nani, sniff around the classrooms and the learners’ schoolbags for any whiff of drugs. Police physically searched through the schoolbags but did not find any weapons or drugs.
