Community concerns raised at Sappi Forum

Members of the Saiccor Advisory Forum.

The quarterly meeting of the Saiccor Mill Coastal Advisory Forum took place in the boardroom of the Italian Club on Wednesday, May 2.

Discussions centered around routine reports on production, plume (clouds of smoke or vapour) visibility, foam on beaches, dive visibility, Mkomanzi River flow, and permit compliance.

Among the community concerns raised was the possibility of a sewer or waste water leakage on the embankment at Sea Fever Lodge, which appeared to be seeping into the beach parking, braai and recreational area on the South bank of the Mkomanzi River mouth.

Sappi staff indicated that this matter would be investigated.

Another concern is the new log depot, situated in proximity to the Naidooville residential area, as residents have contended that it could be a potential fire hazard.

Sappi spokesperson Sam Mokoena responded that Sappi Forrest is attending to this matter and a response could be expected from them.

Sappi was acknowledged for its assistance to Durban Metro in the current work on the rehabilitation of the eroded bank and section of Maclean Street in Umkomaas.
