ST ANNE’S Umzinto Catholic Church Choir recently won a trophy at the KZN Arts and Culture Choral competition held at the Play House in Durban. The choir competed against adult community choirs and managed to win first place.
Owing to the choir’s performance in 2017, the choir received an automatic entry to the 2018 competition without having to attend the regional eliminations.
The choir’s success story began with winning five trophies at the National Catholic Choirs competition.
Soon after this, the choir started competing in the KZN Arts and Culture competitions and in 2016 the choir was placed third at provincial level, after being awarded two first places in the regional eliminations. In 2017, the choir came home with two trophies.
St. Anne’s Umzinto Catholic Church Choir performs mainly choral music and wedding songs, gospel music and traditional music.
The choir is made up of mostly unemployed youngsters from St. Anne’s Catholic Parish in Umzinto and is under the supervision and leadership of seasoned and experienced conductor, Somandla Majola, who always gives hope and encouragement to the choir even when it faces serious challenges and constraints.
The parish priest, Fr. Thobani Mthembu, assisted by the newly ordained Fr Sibusiso Mkhize, both give their full support to the parish choir in all possible ways.
Also offering their support, is the parish council, under the leadership of a very capable chairperson, Mrs Z P Mthuli.
Since its establishment, the choir has been very successful and is steadily growing.
The choir thanks God Almighty for making all things possible despite many challenges.
“We thank God Almighty and all the St. Anne’s Umzinto parishioners for their continued support.
May God bless you all,” said Mr Majola after their latest win.
