RSP man shot during carjacking

The Umzinto SAPS responded to a report of a shooting at Riverside Park on Thursday, September 13 at about 5.30pm and arrived at the scene to find that a 35-year-old man had been shot in the back.

It is alleged that the victim was approached by two men who robbed him at gunpoint of his Toyota Hilux bakkie, cell phone and money. One of the suspects was known to him. Before fleeing the scene in his bakkie, the suspect with the gun fired a shot, hitting him in the back. He was taken to the GJ Crookes Hospital in Scottburgh for medical attention.

Sandile Vincent Vilakazi (28) of Isonti was arrested shortly thereafter and detained. He appeared in the Umzinto Magistrates’ Court on Monday, September 17 on charges of carjacking and attempted murder and the case was remanded until September 26 for a bail application hearing. He remains in police custody. The case is being investigated by Detective Sergeant Nomalen Pillay of the Umzinto SAPS Detective Service. The vehicle was recovered by police, later that night, near the Mpambanyoni River low – level bridge in Umzinto.
