The sale of illicit and non-complying products, triggered a countywide response recently, which necessitated District and Metropolitan Municipalities having to establish Integrated Compliance and Regulatory Forums in their respective areas, to address among others, the issues of illicit, expired and non-complying products.
It is against this background, that the Umdoni / Umzumbe Integrated Compliance and Regulatory Forum, was established on 7 September 2018. The Forum is chaired by Mr Prajesh Ramsumugth, from Ugu District Municipality, and comprises among others, the following stake-holders: UGU Environmental Health Services, Local SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, Consumer Protection, Department of Labour, Business Licensing, Representatives from Umdoni Protection Services, Fire, Building Control and Town Planning, and representatives from Umzumbe Municipality.
The first joint blitz operation was conducted on 19 September, in the Umzinto CBD, and several business outlets were targeted. The blitz operation was a tremendous success and, further blitz operations have been planned for other areas in the District.
