The African soldiers were brought to India by the British to fight the Japanese forces threating British India. He become the role model and a freedom fighter in 3 countinents i.e. Africa, Asia and South America and also the Arab Middle East. Former President Mugabe of Zimbabwe said that he saw Gandhi as his mentor and freedom fighter when he was a student at Fort hare University in the Eastern Cape.
Gandhi will be 150 years shortly. In his life and message we see the dream of civilization come true. No wonder the world was shocked with horror and smitten with grief when it heard that the great soul , rare in any age but amazing in ours , was assasinated.
Presdent Truman of America said that a giant among men had fallen.
This frail man so frail in appearance, was a giant among men, measured by the greatness of his soul.
His profound sincerity of spirit, his freedom his opposition to hatred and malice , his mastery over himself, his human , friendly all-embaracing charity, his strong conviction which he shared with the great ones of history that martydom of the body is nothing compared with the defilement of the soul, and and a conviction which he successfully put to test in many dramatic situations.
When a delegation of African soldiers from Ghana came to meet with him in Chennai. He received them with great warmth and brotherhood. He delayed his speech for a few hours so he could advise the African soldiers how they could attain their freedoms.
Ghana become the first African country to attain its freedom from Colonial British rule in 1957.
The great Soviet leader Jospeh Stalin asked the Indian Ambassador Philosopher Sarvepali Radhakrishnan: “How is it possibe for this small man to mobilize thousands of people for his righteous course and we Communists don’t have his charisma and ability to do this.”
Gandhi said if we could combine perfect charity which abstains from hurting or hating the oppressor, our appeal to the human in our oppressor would become irresistible. To people in Asia, Africa and South America oppressed for centuries by outsiders , he gave a new self respect, a new confidence in himself, a new assurance of strength.
Freedom for Gandhi meant not only to free colonised people but also to free us from communal and racial hatred. Gandhi said: ” Freedom is a mockery so long as men starve, go naked and pine away in voiceless anguish.”
Gandhi said: ” No man, if he is pure has anything more presious to give than his life. I hope I have the purity in me to justify the step.” Until the whole world is redeemed there will be the souless.
We have killed his body , but the spirit in him which is a light from above will penetrate far into space and time and inspire countless generations for nobler living.
