The Ghandinagar Neighbourhood Watch has officially implemented Phase 1 of its community surveillance system, as part of its ongoing crime prevention and intervention strategy.
The GNHW is proud to announce a state-of-the-art CCTV intelligence solution to improve security measures in the Ghandinagar community.
As a result of the ongoing criminal activities that face the Ghandinagar community and surrounding areas, the GNHW decided to beef up the existing crime-combating interventions and install CCTV cameras.
The objective is to prevent, and reduce, the incidence of crime, identifying criminal offenders for the SAPS and enhancing the safety of members of the community.
The first five CCTV cameras were recently installed by appointed contractor Business Solutionz and others. Installed within the area covered by the GNHW, the CCTV cameras are strategically placed in order to maximize security efficiency.
“These cameras serve as an additional means of deterring crime within the area. I am pleased with the pro-activeness shown by our members and we are delighted to have been a part of the solution to reducing crime within the area,” said Julian Soobramoney, chairman of the GNHW.
The GNHW and its executive committee has given much consideration to the processes, legislative frameworks and policy prescripts that protect the privacy of people entering the area and those who reside within it.
“We are mindful of the constitutional right to privacy and the protection of information relating to all persons. Consideration has also been given to camera location that will mitigate the potential for the cameras to be damaged, and will ensure that the cameras will capture clear images in all light and weather conditions.
The issues of how images will be stored or deleted, the circumstances under which images will be shared with the SAPS , ongoing operations management, maintenance of the cameras and related equipment, operating times and other relevant legal matters, have all been taken into consideration,” said Mr Soobramoney.
I would also like to place on record our gratitude to Mr. Bevesh Jeewan owner (PowerWise) and Mr. Sulaman Kadwa (Kadsons) for assiting towards the funding of our camera project.
Your generosity and kindness towards the Ghandinagar community helped make our vision a reality. Our appreciation is also extended to Mr. Mohamed Ally from Business Solutionz for his excellent customer service and part – sponsorship of a free WI-FI connection, and to Mr. Mickey Archery (Nkosi Welding Works) for his sponsor of a galvanized mast.
Lastly, I must commend my members on the sterling work that has been done thus far and laude the efforts of each and every member.
All members have shown the support, commitment, dedication and endurance of true community servants thus making Ghandinagar a safer place for all who live in it. An appeal is also made to the community of Ghandinagar to embrace this initiative and assist the GNHW in contributing towards the funding of Phase 2 of the camera project which will allow us to cover all blind spots with additional cameras.
GNHW will be embarking on a funding programme in the short term and will be calling on our residents to render their support.
Any assistance is welcomed and all persons who are willing to render such should please contact the administrators of the GNHW on 0662491957 /0722607017. The organization further wishes to alert the community of Ghandinagar to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious activity to the GNHW or SAPS.
