Umdoni battling to recover R720 000

Umdoni Municipality, Scottburgh

At a Finance Portfolio Committee Meeting held on Tuesday, March 14 during discussion on Debt Recovery, it was revealed that Umdoni Council is battling to recover an amount R720 000 that is owed to it by Ugu District Municipality.

The capital amount of the debt having been paid off, the current book debt comprises only accumulated interest and penalties. Ugu wanted the debt to be written off.

This matter was referred to a Umdoni Council meeting, which opposed the write off as it would be construed to be a bad precedent and instead resolved that debt must be recovered.

The matter was handed over to an attorney for collection.

The Mayor stated that the matter will be tabled at the mayor’s forum.

Councillor Edwin Baptie of the Democratic Alliance stated that this was an old matter that needed to be resolved.
