Rescheduling of Council meeting causes resentment

Umdoni Municipality, Scottburgh

On June 6, Bongani Khanyile, Umdoni Manager of Communication and Public Patrticipation, notified all councillors that the council meeting scheduled for June 28, 2017 would be moved forward to June 23, 2017 to avoid clashing with the by-election also scheduled for June 28.

This meant that the Exco meeting scheduled for June 20 also needed to be brought forward to another date.

When Cllr Eddie Baptie had initially proposed to council that alternative dates for these meetings should be arranged to avoid clashing schedules for those involved in the by-election, he was met with jeers by the ANC councillors and his proposal was rejected “quite contemptuously”, to quote Cllr Baptie.

Yet now council has adopted those very proposals that Cllr Baptie had recommended.

“I support the principle of changing the council meeting to avoid such clashes, but I cannot support the sheer hypocrisy displayed by the Mayor and the Speaker, to motivate such changes because in this instance it suits them to do so.

It demonstrated the absence of principle and the vindictive intent that all too often forms the basis of council considerations. I will no longer remain silent on such issues,” said Cllr Baptie.
